An inventive re-imagining of the Snow White tell, “Stitching Snow” gives us a feisty, hard-bitten heroine who is a genius at coding computers and technology, tough enough to fight off hard-drinking miners and adept at hiding her identity for eight long years. Essie is a terrific creation, acerbic, wary and scrappy, who takes no guff from anyone and is sure to appeal to those who like robust female characters. This is an incredible story filled with action, adventure, fighting, politics, deception, space travel and enough tech-talk to impress any steampunk or computer nerd. For myself, I often found the technical aspects of the novel too difficult to comprehend and skimmed over them to get to the meat of the scene. However, they are part and parcel of what makes this familiar tale so riveting, new and fresh. “Stitching Snow” is so brilliantly reworked from its fairy tale origins so that it doesn’t seem like the Grimm tale at all; only little touches—seven clanks, a poisoned necklace, shoes that catch on fire—remind you of its origins. I’d recommend this for anyone who likes their fairy tales liberally mixed up with modernistic touches.
