If you have read The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet by Reif Larsen, your expectations might be high for a movie which is about the same character. What we have to remember is that a movie can never duplicate what one has read in a book, because in the reading, you use your imagination to picture the characters and scenes. And when a character is mostly in their head, this is made more difficult. There was something too shiny and bright about this movie, which is a surprise as Jean-Pierre Jeunet's other movies manage to have a patina to them which this movie did not have. The actors were all perfect, although Judy Davis sometimes went over the top in her performance. I would not imagine a person from the venerable Smithsonian behaving the way she did. But, this is Hollywood, after all.
