The Serengeti Rules

the Quest to Discover How Life Works and Why It Matters

Carroll is both a skilled writer and an expert (developmental biology, with an evolutionary perspective). In The Serengeti Rules, he analyzes a living ecosystem (and its recent history). He finds and explains the order that underlies interacting species living on the Serengeti. Plants, pests (i.e., the Rinderpest), rainfall (and its paucity in the African dry season), human presence, and animals in prey-predator relationships--all play a role in what happens on the Serengeti plains and Savannah. He brings a deep understanding to this complexity. I have also read his Endless Forms Most Beautiful (a phrase Darwin used), as I first learned of his expertise in "evo-devo" (evolutionary biology). Enjoying and learning from his Endless Forms, I then read his more recent book The Serengeti Rules. He is a clear explainer, and seems to anticipate the questions that a non-specialist reader might raise. I highly recommend The Serengeti Rules.
